A Trip for my Photography and my Soul
I first stepped foot in Newfoundland in August, 2018. I was with a group doing a photography tour exploring St John’s and surrounding area. After day #2 I was hooked – the landscapes, people, wildlife, hospitality, food (except the cod tongues!) it was so vastly different from the bustling and humid streets back home. It was a trip I needed for my photography and for my soul. I knew I needed to go back!
Scouting the Coastline and Icebergs
I own Art of Intuitive Photography, a boutique photography school located in NYC, and in June 2019 I returned to scout the coastline and icebergs to see if this would be a good destination workshop I could hold for my students. This time I explored Gander, Trinity, Fogo Island and, of course, Twillingate.
We had stopped in Twillingate for lunch and as we had a look around, I saw a flyer advertising the Unscripted Twillingate: Digital Arts Festival.
I jotted the information down thinking I could possibly teach there.
Attending the 2019 Unscripted Twillingate Digital Arts Festival
Three months later I was back again to present my Art of Intuitive Photography workshop! My weekend started off with a freshly baked loaf of bread, homemade jam, and a lovely note from the owner of the house I was staying in. I never received such a kind and warm welcome before (and I have traveled a lot)!
I attended the opening exhibition, held a wonderful workshop, participated in an evening dinner prepared by a well-known chef, had deep and meaningful conversations and meditated on my porch rocking chair watching the sunset over the water. My love for ‘The Rock’ and its people grew.
Going Virtual in 2020
2020 came and went with no foot on Canadian soil. Believe me, I tried! I had scheduled a destination workshop to capture the landscapes and icebergs for June, but that fell through. I was hoping I could at least make it to Twillingate in September for another presentation at the festival but unfortunately the border to Canada was still closed.
BUT, we made it work – I was the opening presenter for their virtual festival! I was a little disappointed at first that I couldn’t be there in person but what I didn’t expect was the number of people who signed up from around the globe! Not only were there attendees from the US and Canada, but Romania, the Philippines, the United Kingdom, Australia, Mexico, Ireland, and India!
WOW! I found it so heartwarming (but not surprising) that a small town in Newfoundland, Canada, can have such a wide and vast global community of supporters. If Newfoundland moved me so much, it was clear it would affect others too!
I will try my best to visit again in 2021 (I have a Newfoundland workshop scheduled for June) but if not, I hope to see you virtually at the next festival in September!
