Workshop : Augmenting the Great Outdoors

Step into the future! Learn what Augmented Reality is and how it can enhance our outdoor experience

Experience a world where your phone or smart device enhances the real world around you.

Augmented reality (AR) describes user experiences that add 2D or 3D elements to the live view from a device’s camera in a way that makes those elements appear to inhabit the real world.

AR technology combines device motion tracking, camera scene capture, advanced scene processing, and display conveniences to simplify the task of building an immersive experience.

Recently, AR has caught the attention of many outdoor, nature and national park institutions and companies as a means of integrating digital technology within our spatial environments.

Workshop Content

An introduction to the concept of Augmented Reality and how it can support one’s daily life and augment an outdoor experience such as walk or hiking.

Demonstration of the unique opportunities that AR provides for digital storytelling within various media (photography/video/audio).

Tools will be shown that assist in experiencing and capturing the great outdoors. Creative tools will be demonstrated and put to use in an outdoor walk around Twillingate.

Workshop Outline

  What is Augmented Reality?
An overview of the technology and opportunities it presents will be disseminated to the group. Technical requirements and guidelines will be outlined, followed by case studies as to how using AR can enhance an outdoor experience (such as walking, hiking, or cross-country skiing) in meaningful ways.

  AR Photo Walk
I will lead a mini hike through Twillingate where we can capture imagery and audio to create our own AR experiences that we will share later with the group.

A wrap-up session where all group members share what they created using AR tools on their smartphones.
